Figures standing at the base of an enormous trunk give this stereograph its sense of scale, with the people looking small beside the tree. Stereographs like this were a popular way for nineteenth- and early twentieth-century audiences to see distant places through a hand-held viewer, and Cuba's large trees, including the silk-cotton ceiba that many Cubans regard as sacred, were frequent subjects. The record does not name the tree, the photographer or the exact date, so those details remain uncertain. Viewed together, the two slightly offset images bring out the depth and height of the trunk.
