The fighting at El Caney on July 1, 1898, was one of the first major clashes of the Santiago campaign in the Spanish-American War, and here American troops press up a hillside toward a small Spanish garrison. Army units under General Joseph Lawton expected a quick fight but found the defenders entrenched in stone buildings and trenches, and the battle dragged on for most of the day. The delay held up the wider assault that morning, making the village a costly early lesson in how hard the Cuban terrain was to take. Notice how exposed the attackers appear on the open slope.
