Soldiers climbing a green tropical slope, with artillery firing and smoke drifting across the ground, make this one of the more dramatic scenes of Cuba's modern wars. Cuba's struggles for independence from Spain in the 1890s drew in the United States in 1898, and the fighting around Santiago de Cuba that summer took place on steep, dense terrain much like this. Images like this one show how difficult it was for both sides to move guns and men through heat, vegetation, and broken hills. Look closely at the smoke and the uphill angle to see how the attack was pressed against the ground itself.
