Pith helmets distinguish this battle scene, placing the soldiers in the lightweight tropical headgear that colonial and expeditionary forces wore in the late 1800s. Cuba was the center of the Cuban War of Independence, which began in 1895 against Spanish colonial rule and drew in the United States in 1898. The artillery shown points to the larger, more organized fighting of those campaigns, as opposed to the guerrilla actions that marked much of the rural conflict. The uniforms and equipment are worth studying for clues about which forces fought here and how.
