What sets this scene apart is the flag carried across the field. Its single white star on a red triangle marks it as the Cuban flag, a symbol of the independence movement that rallied insurgents against Spanish colonial rule. Mounted fighters bearing such banners were a familiar sight in the rural campaigns of the 1890s, when much of the war was fought on horseback across open countryside. The conflict, which began in 1895 and drew in the United States in 1898, reshaped the island's future well beyond the battlefield.
