Sailors pulling oars through choppy water, with boats packed shoulder to shoulder with soldiers, make this scene unusual on a board of harbor views. Small boats like these were the standard way to move troops from large ships to shore when deep-draft transports could not get close to the beach or pier. Operations of this kind were common in Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, when the harbors and coastal landings were often crowded and slow. The picture shows the physical work behind those campaigns, where crews made dozens of trips under exposed conditions.
