Palm trees dot the rising ground in this wash drawing, and a column of mounted soldiers moves across the slope, their figures reduced to quick tonal strokes. The Cuban landscape of the 1890s was the setting for the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898) and the Spanish-American War that followed in 1898, when the island's hills and open country were campaign ground. Wash drawings like this were often made by artists in the field and then reproduced in illustrated newspapers, which had not yet widely adopted photographic reproduction. The loose, atmospheric handling suggests a sketch made to capture movement and terrain as much as detail.
