The poster's message is blunt: independence for Puerto Rico, a demand that independence groups on the island and among supporters abroad pressed for decades. The Library of Congress dates it only to a span between 1965 and 1980, a period when the island's status as a commonwealth associated with the United States, in place since 1952, was hotly debated in San Juan and on the mainland. Posters like this one were a common way for independence movements to rally supporters, mark causes, and press their case in public spaces. The catalog notes list a gift from Gary Yanker, which places the piece among the Library's American poster holdings.
