The spiral stair wraps around a central column inside the statue's copper shell, a part of the structure most visitors never see. The interior iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm and was built to hold the copper skin in place, which is why the stair and its supports look so industrial. These color photographs were taken during the 1984-85 restoration, when the interior was opened for repair ahead of the statue's centennial. The greenish cast in the image echoes the patina that has covered the copper exterior since the 1900s.
