The close view of the fingers around the torch shows the part of the statue most visibly altered over its history. The original 1886 torch was damaged in 1916 and later replaced with a version that had a balcony around it, and in the mid-1980s restoration crews were working on the monument's copper and iron structure, including the arm and torch. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, which was dedicated in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886. Photographs taken during the 1984 to 1986 restoration are useful for seeing the copper surface and the hand up close at a time when it was scaffolded and under repair.
