Taken during 1984 and 1985, this view captures the Statue of Liberty in the middle of a major restoration ahead of its centennial. The caption gives little beyond a catalog number, so the exact scene is best read from the image itself. The statue, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, was being repaired and refurbished on Liberty Island, work that included replacing the torch and reinforcing the copper skin and iron framework inside. Its green patina, formed over decades as the copper oxidized, is worth noticing in color photographs from this period.
