Few places in the national park system carry the weight of Yellowstone, and this picture points to the ranger naturalist program that helped shape how visitors experienced it. Ranger naturalists were the park's interpreters, leading walks, giving talks, and explaining geysers, wildlife, and geology to crowds who came by rail and automobile in growing numbers. The Old Faithful setting, with its wooden lodges and gathered spectators waiting for the eruption, shows how central that guidance became to the park's visitor life in the early twentieth century.
