The Pilgrim Tercentenary Pageant, staged in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1921, marked 300 years since the Mayflower passengers came ashore at Plymouth Rock. The pageant ran for several days on a broad outdoor field, with hundreds of local residents costumed as colonists, Wampanoag figures and characters from the Pilgrims' story, performing scenes drawn from the town's founding. Its "Royal" title points to the royal and public pageant style popular in Britain and America in the early 1900s, when communities used large staged histories to build civic pride. Look closely at the costumes and staging, which reflect how 1920s Americans imagined their colonial past.
