Few buildings in this Detroit Publishing Company set are as directly tied to a religious institution as this one. The Presbyterian Building was a commercial structure in Manhattan that housed the church's publishing and administrative work, so its business and its mission shared one address. Detroit Publishing Company photographers worked across the country between about 1890 and the 1920s, documenting cities as they were rebuilt around new office blocks and street-level shops. The glass negative, made in the years before 1915, captures that transition, when New York's streets were filling with taller commercial buildings. Its survival as a large 8 by 10 inch plate gives a sharp record of the street's architecture at that moment.
