Buda Castle, titled here as the "Königl Burg," sits on Castle Hill on the Buda bank of the Danube, facing the Pest side of the city across the river. The palace had been heavily damaged during the 1849 siege of Buda, and during the 1890s it was undergoing a large rebuilding program in Baroque style that changed its appearance. This photochrom print comes from a Zürich firm that produced hand-tinted color views of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for travelers and home buyers, and its soft, painterly color is typical of the process.
