Union Square in Manhattan, photographed from the upper floors of Tiffany's, offers a rare elevated view of a park that was then a busy crossroads of the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made tens of thousands of views of American cities and landscapes around 1900, often used such vantage points to show streets and public spaces in sweeping detail. Union Square had long served as a gathering place for political rallies and as a stop for streetcars and carriages, and a picture taken from above captures how the paths, traffic and surrounding storefronts came together. The glass negative, made between 1900 and 1905, is one of the surviving records of the square in that transitional period before the automobile dominated the streets.
