Taken on May 6, 1925, this photograph records the Syrian Temple in Cincinnati, Ohio, a lodge of the Shriners, the fraternal order whose local chapters are called temples and carry names drawn from the Near East. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century, made the image on a glass negative, a format common before film became standard. The record notes streaks and blemishes caused by deterioration of the original coatings, so some marks on the image come from the negative itself.
