Edgartown, on the eastern end of Martha's Vineyard, appears here in a bird's-eye panorama, the angled perspective that Boston firms such as George H. Walker & Co. favored for showing a whole town at a glance. By 1886 the village had long since passed its peak as one of New England's leading whaling ports, when its harbor sent ships to distant seas and its merchants built the substantial houses that still line its streets. The map captures the town near the close of that era, with its harbor, streets and principal buildings drawn in close detail.
