This 1886 bird's-eye panorama shows Amherst, Massachusetts, a college town in the Connecticut River Valley, from an elevated angle that lets the viewer take in the whole village at once. The town was home to Amherst College, founded in 1821, and to the Massachusetts Agricultural College, which had opened in 1867, so the campuses, churches and streets around the town common stand out in the drawing. Burleigh's firm produced many such views of New England towns in the 1880s, when lithographed panoramas were a popular way for residents and local businesses to see their community laid out in detail.
