Elizabeth Cady Stanton is the sitter here, and she became one of the most important voices in the American women's rights movement. In 1848 she and Lucretia Mott organized the Seneca Falls Convention in New York, where Stanton drafted the Declaration of Sentiments, a document modeled on the Declaration of Independence that called for equal rights for women, including the vote. The print is credited to the photographer Veeder, but its caption card records no date, so the exact year it was made is unknown. Portraits like this were widely circulated in that era, helping public figures reach supporters and readers beyond their own communities.
