Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward, the Massachusetts writer who lived from 1844 to 1911, appears here seated in a chair, turned to the left, in a three-quarter length view. She is best known for her novel "The Gates Ajar," published in 1868, which was widely read in its day and tackled grief and the afterlife in the wake of the Civil War. This halftone reproduction comes from the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, and since the caption card gives no date, the image is best placed by the ways late nineteenth-century printing reproduced photographs in books and magazines.
