This seated, three-quarter-length portrait shows the painter Archibald Motley turned slightly to the left, a pose that gives the figure a settled, unhurried presence. Motley, born in New Orleans in 1891 and raised in Chicago, became known for vivid paintings of Black urban life, including jazz clubs, street scenes and family gatherings. He spent much of the 1920s in Paris, and his work was shown during the Harlem Renaissance. The record does not give a date for the photograph, so its exact year is unknown, but it likely reflects how he presented himself to the public as an artist of his era.
