Elizabeth Cady Stanton appears here in a close profile, facing right, with her hair drawn back under a bonnet. The portrait dates to 1854, a few years after she had become a central organizer of the American women's rights movement. Stanton drafted the Declaration of Sentiments for the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, the first women's rights convention in the United States, and she spent the following decades pressing for suffrage, property rights and divorce reform. Early photographic portraits like this one were often used by reformers to put a recognizable face to their causes.
