Taken from the upper deck of a transatlantic liner, Alfred Stieglitz's *The Steerage* looks down on third-class passengers gathered on the lower deck, so the ship's class divide is visible in a single frame. Stieglitz made the exposure in 1907 on a return voyage from Europe, and he later reproduced it as a photogravure in *Camera Work*, the journal he edited to promote photography as an art. The image is often cited for its geometry, as slanting lines of deck, rope, and figures flatten into a nearly abstract pattern. For visitors to Ellis Island, where many of these passengers were headed, it offers a view of the crossing before the inspection line.
