Few institutions in the capital have deeper roots than George Washington University, which traces its origins to Columbian College, chartered in 1821 and renamed in 1904. This glass negative was made by the National Photo Company sometime between 1910 and 1920, when the firm was documenting Washington's buildings and streets for sale to visitors. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, a reminder of how fragile these early negatives are. Even so, it offers a glimpse of the university as the city grew up around it.
