Oats were a staple small-grain crop across the Georgia countryside, and this view puts the work of bringing them in at the center of the frame. Harvesting in the southeastern part of the state was largely a matter of hand labor and animal power in the years this kind of photograph was made, with cut stalks gathered, bundled and hauled from the fields before threshing. Scenes like this one record a farming routine that changed quickly with mechanized equipment in the twentieth century, which makes them useful for seeing how rural labor was organized before that shift.
