Few images from the 1480s show the work of bringing in a crop as plainly as this woodcut, which its record dates to 1486. Woodcuts of this kind appeared in the early decades of European printing, when the press was still new, and agricultural scenes often illustrated calendars and almanacs in which each month was tied to a task on the land. A good harvest decided whether a household would eat well through winter, so the subject carried real weight. Notice how the figures sit within the field and how the tools are reduced to simple, bold lines, which reflects the limits and craft of cutting a design into a block of wood.
