A wagon heaped with the season's final sheaves marks the close of the harvest in this hand-colored lithograph, a moment many rural communities celebrated with a harvest home supper. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued thousands of sheets between the 1850s and the early 1900s, sold scenes like this to a public that often had roots in the countryside or missed it. Because color was applied by hand, often by teams of workers, surviving impressions of the same design can differ noticeably in their greens, golds, and browns.
