Few prints of the 1840s show field work as plainly as this one, which depicts farmworkers resting at midday, or "nooning," during the harvest. William Sidney Mount, a Long Island painter known for rural genre scenes, made the original picture, which was owned by Iona Sturges, and Alfred Jones engraved it for the Apollo Association. The association distributed the print to its members in 1843, and the Library of Congress holds a set of progressive proofs showing the plate in unfinished states. The image is also notable for including African American laborers among the workers, a presence that appears less often in the period's rural art.
