Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive color lithographs to a broad public, issued this print around 1871 under the title "The Western Farmers Home." Its subject is the frontier homestead rather than the settled farm of the East, a theme that suited the firm's audience of families who read about westward migration and dreamed of land beyond the older states. Printed as a lithograph, the image was meant to be hung on a parlor wall and read as an idealized picture of rural prosperity. Collectors today value Currier & Ives work for the way it preserves popular views of American farm life in the decade after the Civil War.
