Happy Walker's Madrillion Society Orchestra is the name this group carries, a Washington dance band photographed around 1922. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, whose studio recorded city life in Washington, D.C., during the first decades of the twentieth century, including local clubs, businesses and performers. Dance orchestras like this one were in demand for club dances, theater engagements and private parties in the years after World War I, when jazz and popular dance music spread quickly through American cities. The instruments the musicians hold are worth a close look, since they reflect how dance bands were changing in the period.
