Painted scenes of children, trees, and animals decorate the interior of the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., making the mural the subject of this view. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, photographed government buildings and notable interiors, and its pictures document how such rooms looked during that period. Murals with rural and everyday themes were central to post-revolutionary Mexico's public art in the 1920s, when the government promoted them as a celebration of its people and landscape. The record dates the photograph only to a span between 1909 and 1932, so the exact year remains uncertain.
