The Austrian Embassy at 1304 18th Street NW, pictured here from the inside, served Austria-Hungary's diplomatic corps in Washington in the early 1900s. Like many foreign missions of the period, it occupied a leased townhouse in the residential streets near Dupont Circle rather than a purpose-built building. The picture's subject tags focus on the furnishings, so the upholstered chairs, draperies, and decorative objects offer a glimpse of how European legations presented their countries to visiting officials and guests. The record dates the print only to a span between about 1903 and 1916.
