Step inside the Japanese legation at 1310 N Street NW in Washington, as Frances Benjamin Johnston recorded it in 1893. Johnston was one of the most active photographers in the capital in those years, and her interior views of official residences and offices give a rare look at how diplomatic households arranged their rooms and displayed their possessions. Japan had maintained a diplomatic presence in Washington since the 1870s, and at the time of this picture its mission was working to present the country to American officials and visitors as a modern nation with its own refined artistic traditions. The room's furnishings and decoration would have been read as deliberate statements about that identity.
