The interior of the Co-operative Bookstore at Howard University is the subject here, a rare glimpse of a campus retail space from the late 1920s. Howard, the historically Black university founded in 1867 in Washington, D.C., ran this store as a student-oriented cooperative, a model that let students share in the business of buying their textbooks and supplies. The photograph was made by the Scurlock Studio, the Washington firm that documented Black life and institutions in the city for decades. Its shelves and fixtures offer a sense of how an academic bookshop looked in the period.
