This December 1936 view shows the new Department of the Interior building in Washington shortly before its completion, with the interior and lobby work in focus. The photograph was taken by Commercial Photo Co. for the contractor, George A. Fuller Co., and the building was one of the large federal structures erected along the Federal Triangle in the 1930s. Its stone-clad, monumental design reflected the government's effort to give the capital a unified civic character during the Depression. Images like this one document both the construction process and the finished spaces that were meant to project the department's public presence.
