Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley west of Boston, is pictured here as it stood in 1892, roughly seventeen years after Henry Fowle Durant, a Boston lawyer, founded it as a women's college and it opened in 1875. The campus was laid out on high ground above Lake Waban, and its buildings, set among wooded grounds and estates, made the institution one of the most visible educational projects in the region. Wellesley was part of a wider debate in New England over whether women should receive a serious college education, and the school's rigorous curriculum drew students from across the country. The town's rail connections to Boston kept the college tied to the metropolitan economy, even as its reputation rested on its academic standards and its emphasis on learning for women.
