In 1876, Wellesley College was still a very young school, and its first class would not graduate until 1879. The campus sat in the rural part of Norfolk County, about a dozen miles west of Boston, where the local economy rested on small farms, orchards, and the village trades that served them. Boston drew its wealth from shipping, shoe manufacturing, and the textile mills of the Merrimack Valley, and many of the families sending daughters to the college had earned their money in those businesses. To contemporaries, the campus stood as a test of whether a young woman could pursue a demanding course of study and remain healthy and respectable.
