Wellesley College, in the village of Wellesley, Massachusetts, appeared in Harper's Weekly in 1876, the centennial year, when a national illustrated weekly could carry a view of a small women's college to readers in many states. The Main Building, a large stone and brick structure, held much of the school's life under one roof, including classrooms, the dining hall, and residences for students and faculty, so the view shows the college nearly whole. The grounds around it were still being cleared, graded, and planted on the rural land west of Boston. For readers far from New England, the picture offered a glimpse of women's higher education in its early years.
