Wellesley College, Massachusetts, sat on high ground above Lake Waban in 1876, when the school was still a young women's college in the rural village of Wellesley, west of Boston. That same year the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia drew crowds to mark the nation's hundredth birthday, while back in New England the question of whether women could endure serious study was argued in print. Edward Clarke's 1873 book *Sex in Education* had warned that college work would harm young women's health, and schools like Wellesley answered by stressing fresh air, walking, and regular exercise alongside their lessons. Farm fields and pastures still lay close to the new buildings, so students and neighboring families shared a landscape that was only beginning to take on its campus form.
