Wellesley College in 1876 was a women's school still settling into its grounds in the village of Wellesley, Massachusetts, where the land sloped down toward Lake Waban. That spring the national news reached New England with Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patent in March and, by June, reports of Custer's defeat at the Little Bighorn. In Boston, the filling of the Back Bay was reshaping the city's edge, drawing on the same building trades and capital that were raising new structures across the region. For students and faculty at the college, these events arrived by newspaper and letter from far away, while the young school worked to establish its routines on the hillside.
