Wellesley College had grown out of a seminary founded by Henry Fowle Durant, a Boston lawyer who used his own fortune to build the school on the hills above Lake Waban in the village of Wellesley. Durant wanted young women to receive the same rigorous schooling that men got at Harvard and other colleges, and the 1876 view shows an institution still shaping its purpose. The village itself remained rural, with farming and the small trades that served farm families as the main livelihood, and the college's buildings stood out sharply against that landscape. Rail connections to Boston made the campus reachable for trustees, parents, and visitors, which mattered to a school that depended on public confidence in its early years.
