Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley west of Boston, was a women's college in 1901, about 25 years after it opened in 1875 under the will and vision of Henry Durant. The campus sat on land near Lake Waban, and the surrounding estates of wealthy Boston families gave the area a country-house character. Horatio Hollis Hunnewell, whose gardens and pinetum are shown here, was among the prominent local landowners, and the town took its name from his estate. Around 1901 the college was known across New England as a serious place for women's education, with its strong emphasis on science, literature, and the arts. Its students and faculty made the lakeside setting a familiar part of the town's identity.
