Wellesley College, in the town of Wellesley about fifteen miles west of Boston, was in 1901 a young women's college only about three decades old, founded in 1870 by Henry and Pauline Durant. Its Main Building, the large central structure shown in this bird's-eye view, housed much of the college's teaching, dining, and administrative life, and the campus was known for its lakeside setting and its emphasis on serious academic study for women. Wellesley's students came mostly from New England and the Middle Atlantic states, and many went on to teach, to work in the growing field of social reform, or to pursue advanced study. The college was also expanding its science facilities and grounds during these years, reflecting the broader national debate over women's higher education.
