Wellesley College in 1900 was a women's college on the shore of Lake Waban, in the town of Wellesley, west of Boston. Henry Fowle Durant founded it in 1870, and it opened in 1875 to offer young women a college education on the same serious terms that men's colleges offered. By the turn of the century the campus held a cluster of halls set among lawns and woods, and students rowed and skated on the lake. The town was a quiet suburb whose residents commuted to Boston by the Boston and Albany railroad, and the college gave the place its name and reputation.
