Wellesley College and Lake Waban in 1906 show a women's college that had grown up in the rural town of Wellesley, about 12 miles west of Boston, since it opened in 1875. Founded by Henry Fowle Durant, the school was built around its own lake, which students used for boating and winter skating and which gave the campus much of its setting. In 1906 Wellesley was known across New England as one of the leading colleges for women, and its graduates were moving into teaching, science, and the growing number of professions open to them. The town itself was still semi-rural, reached by the railroad line running west from Boston, so the campus, with its scattered halls and wooded grounds, stood apart from the commercial life of the nearby cities.
