Few things drew crowds in turn-of-the-century American cities like a fraternal order's grand parade, and this stereograph captures the Elks' procession through St. Louis on June 21, 1899. Made as a stereo card, the image was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the marching ranks and street crowds a sense of depth that a flat print could not. The card was copyrighted that same year by B.L. Singley, and it later passed through the collection of Marian S. Carson. It offers a useful view of civic display and fraternal life in the late 1890s.
