Few places in turn-of-the-century New York were as closely watched as Fifth Avenue on a Sunday, and this long, narrow panorama records the avenue at its most fashionable. Its wide format, nearly two and a half times as long as it is tall, suited the broad sweep of the street. The print was entered for copyright in May 1902 under the name Falk, with a claimant address at the Waldorf-Astoria, the grand hotel that had opened on Fifth Avenue at 34th Street in 1897. Made on silver printing-out paper, it shows early commercial photography at work, when views like this were sold to residents and visitors eager to see the city's best-known thoroughfare.
