A stereo card of the parade moving beneath the Dewey Arch, photographed on September 30, 1899, when crowds turned out to welcome home Admiral George Dewey. Dewey had led the U.S. Navy to victory at Manila Bay in May 1898, early in the Spanish-American War, and New York's temporary triumphal arch was built to honor him. Made of plaster over a wooden frame, it was meant to stand only briefly, so the photograph records a monument that was never intended to last. The card was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company and is best viewed through a stereoscope, which turns the twin images into a single view with depth.
