Crowds fill both sidewalks and spill toward the curb as a large, decorated float rolls down the middle of the street, its figures and banners rising above the onlookers. Street parades of this kind were a common way for American cities to mark holidays and civic occasions in the early twentieth century, drawing neighborhood families, vendors and visitors into the same public space. Floats were often built by local clubs or businesses, so each one doubled as a showcase of craftsmanship and local pride. The packed sidewalks in this scene show how much these processions meant to the people who came out to watch them.
